APPLICATION FOR RESIDENCY IN RIGA 2009

“Culture and Arts Project NOASS” – a creative intelligence association and one of the oldest non-governmental arts and culture organisations in Latvia – with financial support of the Nordic Culture Point via the Nordic-Baltic Mobility Programme for Culture Residency Module is honoured to announce a call for application to Artist-in-Residence programme in Riga.

We are looking for:

A professional artist, curator or cultural manager from Baltic or Nordic states (Permanently living in one of these countries). With personal motivation to carry out artistic activity.
We especially welcome candidates who work in the field of video art or who are interested in naïve art or art brut.

We offer up to 2 month working stay in 2009 with:

1)Accommodation – wonderful studio-type self-catering apartment in the heart of the city centre at Alfreda Kalnina iela 8, next to the Vermanes Garden and the oldest circus in Europe. The apartments are located on the 5th floor with a view over the city’s roofs to the park. The studio is fully furnished, with access to the internet. It is ideal for two people.
The NOASS Culture and Arts Centre is located within 15 min walk of the studio, walking through the Old Town of Riga which is home pleasant cafés, the Artists’ Union, the market, railway station, bus station and museums.
2) Working conditions
On our part, we offer exhibition premises, technical equipment, a large-format 5x8mLED screen for the presentation of video works, projectors, technical personnel and consultations, audio equipment for lectures, presentations or musical performances and a 110 m2 exhibition space for the presentation of works.
The NOASS Arts Centre provides access to an elementary technical base for the creation of video art works (HD Sony video camera, editing computer, demonstration technology, a video archive and the Internet). As and when necessary, we can provide the resident with technical assistance for the creation of works of art.
3) Presentation space
The conclusion of the residence, we offer the resident the chance to exhibit his or her work on the Betanovuss Floating Gallery or in one of the Museum of Naive Art’s various spaces. Artists will have the chance to present themselves and their country on the big screen to an audience in the Betanovuss multi-functional centre.
4) Visits
We offer the resident the chance to discover Tallinn and Vilnius. He or she would have the additional opportunity to discover alternative culture centres including: Aizpute, Liepāja, Kuldīga, Sabile, Talsi and Kandava. This will provide a more complete introduction not only to urban life in Latvia, but also to its small towns, landscapes and open spaces.

5)Expenses covered:
We cover travel expenses, lodging, per diems, and other costs directly related to the artists´ activities during the residence period within reason and upon
previous agreement with the team of Culture and Arts Project NOASS.
