The 16th season at „Culture and Arts Project NOASS” starts during the Night of Museums, with an opening of a solo show “Dynamis”, by abstract expressionist artist Kaspars Teodors Brambergs and an exhibition of naïve art from the collection of Latvian Naïve Art Museum. The evening will conclude well after midnight with energetic musical vibes of band „Coco’nuts” and DJ Gosh Snobo performance.

Evening program:

18.00 – 21.00 – opening reception of solo show „Dynamis” by artist Kaspars Teodors Brambergs and the Latvian Museum of Naive Art;

21.00 – 23.00 – „Coco’nuts” concert;

23.00 – 01.00 – solo show „Dynamis” by artist Kaspars Teodors Brambergs and the Latvian Museum of Naive Art open for public access

23.00 – 01.00 – DJ Gosh Snobo.

NOASS is preparing for 15th season

This year Culture and Arts project NOASS marks the fifteenth year of existence. In the new season NOASS have made special program for all Summer.

15th Anniversary year will start in the end of May with Trans Europe Halles (TEH), Independent Culture Centers meeting in Riga. TEH meeting in Riga will bring together more than 150 participants from 50 Cultural centers across the Europe. The reason of TEH meetings is to learn, share experiences, establish new contacts and develop cultural projects and initiatives. The meeting highlights city and also the country where it takes place, marking it in culture map as intersection of important ideas. That’s why NOASS have prepared a special event program, which will give participants opportunity to get acquainted with Riga as a city which is opened to contemporary culture developments. Besides, TEH 30 anniversary celebration party will take place in Riga!

Continuing the season an open-air cinema project “Film Island” will take place on AB Dam. During this project bright and attractive video programs from around the world will be shown to open-air screens.

14. – 17. June NOASS will become a home for contemporary dance festival “Time to Dance”, which is organized by the Latvian Professional Contemporary Dance Choreographers Association.

In 15^th season also the location of Latvian Naive Art Museum has changed. From June 2013 museum will be moved to floating art gallery BETANOVUSS (AB Dam 2, LV-1048, Riga). Museum will continue to show naive art works in contemporary art context. Visitors are welcome free of charge.

NOASS is still successfully participating in program “Artists in residence”. We are continuing to introduce the inhabitants of Riga with artists from other countries and their work, and in turn provide artists with the chance to discover Riga as a city of diverse contrasts by presenting the residency as an opportunity to get inspired.

3.aprīlī tika atklāta IV starptautiskā naivās mākslas izstāde „INSITA – 2012”, kas ir veltīta Marka Šagala 125 gadu jubilejai. Izstādē ar Latvijas konsulāta Vitebskā atbalstu savas kolekcijas eksponē arī Latvijas Naivās mākslas muzejs.

Exploring and Mapping Outsider Art in Europe

Outsider art is flourishing. On 26 April 2012 the book On the Map. Exploring European Outsider Art – a Notebook will be presented at an international symposium in Ghent. The publication explores 60 initiatives – good practices in the field of outsider art – in 26 countries in Europe. Not only does it look at the places where outsider art is created (workshops, sheltered workshops, etc), but also the places where it is presented (museums, galleries, etc).

At the symposium Outsiders on the Map, details of many of the initiatives in the book will be presented. Great emphasis will be placed on the organisations, workshops and museums that have done outstanding work to give outsider art a place in the cultural and social debate.

One of these 60 initiatives also is Naive Art Museum of Latvia located in Riga, Andrejsala - a former port district.

Entering its second decade, this year’s “International Contemporary and Video Art Festival WATERPIECES” will set off around the world, offering visitors to the festival not only the latest trends and developments within video art, but also colourful and attractive selections of works from the most diverse countries and regions.

From 2 – 4 September we will kick off the festival with a creative animation workshop “Naïve animation at the Naïve Art Museum” which will be run by “Multenkulten” Studio, and attended by a select group of invited participants aged from 16 – 116 years. Apply for the workshop.

This year’s Waterpieces Festival has the special honour of welcoming the travelling video festival “CologneOFF – Video Art in the Global Context” programme, which combines video selections from all over the world. On the opening day of the festival, a lecture on video art in the global context will be given by CologneOFF Director Wilfried Agricola de Cologne.

“Cologne OFF” is one of the world’s most notable video festivals and stands out through the geographical diversity of its video selections, as well as the number of art curators it invites. Throughout 2011, the travelling video festival programme has visited more than 40 countries across six continents.

The festival’s traditional nightly outdoor screenings will also be held continuing the festival’s long-standing collaboration with the International Short Film Festival Oberhausen, as well as the Japan Media Arts Festival.

This year, Oberhausen will present a programme of video works by young artists, while over two evenings the Japan Media Arts Festival will showcase the latest achievements in technology, as well as accenting the impact of pop culture and the development of video.

As part of the “White Night” Contemporary Art Festival – saying neither yes nor no, nor white, nor black – the conclusion of Waterpieces will be rounded off by an evening of ambient music “Noisy Nature” (Skaļā darba), as well as a presentation of video works created by the participants in the animation workshop.

During the festival, “Betanovuss” Floating Arts Centre will host an exhibition in which five different selections of video works will be shown every evening, showcasing programmes compiled by different curators from all over the world comprised of colourful, vivid and captivating works of video art, as well as three works made by Finish video artist Eric Mutel in 2010 – “2x IS”, ”Warm up”, “Mute”.
