WATERPIECES 2011

Entering its second decade, this year’s “International Contemporary and Video Art Festival WATERPIECES” will set off around the world, offering visitors to the festival not only the latest trends and developments within video art, but also colourful and attractive selections of works from the most diverse countries and regions.

From 2 – 4 September we will kick off the festival with a creative animation workshop “Naïve animation at the Naïve Art Museum” which will be run by “Multenkulten” Studio, and attended by a select group of invited participants aged from 16 – 116 years. Apply for the workshop.

This year’s Waterpieces Festival has the special honour of welcoming the travelling video festival “CologneOFF – Video Art in the Global Context” programme, which combines video selections from all over the world. On the opening day of the festival, a lecture on video art in the global context will be given by CologneOFF Director Wilfried Agricola de Cologne.

“Cologne OFF” is one of the world’s most notable video festivals and stands out through the geographical diversity of its video selections, as well as the number of art curators it invites. Throughout 2011, the travelling video festival programme has visited more than 40 countries across six continents.

The festival’s traditional nightly outdoor screenings will also be held continuing the festival’s long-standing collaboration with the International Short Film Festival Oberhausen, as well as the Japan Media Arts Festival.

This year, Oberhausen will present a programme of video works by young artists, while over two evenings the Japan Media Arts Festival will showcase the latest achievements in technology, as well as accenting the impact of pop culture and the development of video.

As part of the “White Night” Contemporary Art Festival – saying neither yes nor no, nor white, nor black – the conclusion of Waterpieces will be rounded off by an evening of ambient music “Noisy Nature” (Skaļā darba), as well as a presentation of video works created by the participants in the animation workshop.

During the festival, “Betanovuss” Floating Arts Centre will host an exhibition in which five different selections of video works will be shown every evening, showcasing programmes compiled by different curators from all over the world comprised of colourful, vivid and captivating works of video art, as well as three works made by Finish video artist Eric Mutel in 2010 – “2x IS”, ”Warm up”, “Mute”.

As usual at the start of September we will begin the new working year and colourful autumn with the Waterpieces International Contemporary and Video Art Festival which this year will take place over three days from 8-10 September on AB Dambis, as well as at the NOASS and Betanovuss Floating Arts Centre.

We will begin the second decade of the festival with video programmes from the “Japan Media Arts Festival” and “The archive of the International Short Film Festival Oberhausen”, as well as showcasing “CologneOFF – Video Art in the Global Context” – a three day travelling festival exhibition.

Cologne Off is a festival that has evolved from the Cologne Online Festival, which for several years has operated as an Internet-based network which unites art curators and video artists from all over the world. In order not to lose the essence of the festival as a network, CologneOFF has become a travelling contemporary art event and throughout 2011 it has drawn the attention of visitors to video as a global art medium rapidly gaining in popularity which, utilising the opportunities provided by a communications network, reaches far beyond the borders of countries and regions. During Waterpieces, special attention will be paid to the moving image’s unlimited means of expression, particularly highlighting the contribution of artists and curators in promoting video art across the globe.

This year we will also augment the festival with an informal discussion about video art and its latest developments which will be chaired by programme curators: Wilfried Agricola de Cologna and representatives of the International Short Film Festival Oberhausen.

Likewise, the 11th Waterpieces International Contemporary and Video Art Festival’s showcases and exhibition will be made more colourful by a three day masterclass “Naive Animation at Naive Art Museum” coordinated by “multenkulten” Studio, which has previously organised creative workshops at various festivals in Rīga, Liepāja, Cēsis and Ventspils. Participants in the Waterpieces Workshop will have the chance to create a video from recycled materials, and the works created during the masterclass will be presented to the public at the conclusion of the festival. The programme will be led by animator Kristīna Ratniece and architect Ivars Šmits.

Augmenting “multenkulten’s” showcase, as part of the White Night programme, a musical performance will be given on the final evening of the festival by “Bērnu rīts” (“Kids’ Morning”), presenting an evening of moving soundscapes entitled “Skaļā daba” (“Noisy nature”).

We further inform you that this year the annual best Baltic video work competition will not take place. In future, the competition will take place every second year and will be open to participants from the whole Baltic Sea region.

ABOUT WATERPIECES

Cultivating traditions through a synchronicity of evolution and progress, this year the Waterpieces festival will satiate the palates of audiovisual art connoisseurs for the ninth time. Throughout its history, experimenting and stretching the boundaries of artistic expression, the festival has preserved its specific aura by occupying the most diverse forms and scopes and addressing both artists and art lovers.

The festival is traditionally comprised of competition and festival programmes offering a miscellany of unusual acoustic, movement and visual presentations. It is also a showcase for globally renowned festival and experimental film archive programmes which are complemented by presentations by curators and creative workshops. This year, the festival will focus on “pixel art” which at an associative level brings to mind the first computer games such as the color classic “Tetris”, but which nowadays has become a stimulating and challenging medium of expression for artists. Waterpieces will consider this art form more extensively and in greater depth with the help of a panel discussion, artwork generating creative workshops and artists’ performances.

Waterpieces will get under way with an audiovisual art exhibition/competition, as well as a one man show by the winner of the 2008 festival Grand Prix, Krišs Salmanis warming up AB Dambis for the central festival programme which will take place from September 4-6.

Submission  of works for the WATERPIECES 2009 audiovisual festival competition ended on 31 st of July. The competition jury selected thirteen works which will be exhibited from September 4 until October 4 in a dedicated exhibition on the floating gallery “Betanovuss and Noass”, AB dambis 2, Riga, as well as being subsequently distributed in the 2009 competition DVD showreel.

GRAND PRIX – a bronze figurine “Udensgabals/Waterpiece” and 1500 LVL for a new art work profited by AB.LV Fonds.
With agreement of the authors, the selected works will be distributed to other international festivals.

“Culture and Arts Project NOASS” in collaboration with the Nordic – Baltic residency programme AIR and artist Gary Wornell from Finland presents two creative digital printing courses where the participates will have the opportunity to obtain a new knowledge about the calibration of colours and the use of alternative printing methods.

Those who have the experience working with inkjet printers know that not always the printed material looks the same as it was meant to be at the beginning of the project. Gary Wornell, during his works and experiments in the studio with wide range of media, has found out many new ways how to overcome printing problems and gain an appropriate printing result.

These courses are for participates with all levels of knowledge about desktop/wide format inkjet printers.

2 DAY CREATIVE DIGITAL PRINTING COURSE

For beginners and basic level students familiar with moderate experience of desktop/wide format inkjet printers.

The idea of this course is to open the doors to the possibilities of inkjet printing on a wide variety of media and encourage the use of alternative printing methods.
By learning about the technical possibilities and limitations of inkjet printers, the student will quickly be able to assess the potential success of an idea based on the hard facts governing these complex printing devices. By understanding what the printer can and cannot do the student will be able to implement creative solutions to overcome problems.

Course outline
The course will give the student basic training on operating Epson Medium and Wide Format printers including settings for various media and print quality.
The course will include the preparation with inkjet pre-coatings on a variety of alternative media including very thin Japanese papers, fine art papers, synthetic materials and metal sheet.

• Methods for media feed including edge to edge on deckled edge papers.
• The use of Qimage printing software will also prepare the student for professional style printing work flow including colour profiles for standard
Epson Media.
• Post coating for print protection. The use of postcoats with UVLS (Ultra Violet Light Stabilisers) Facilities at the studio

Students will have the full use of:
• 2 Windows XP OS computers with calibrated monitors (you are encouraged to use your own laptop if you have one to reduce waiting times on the printing workstations.
• Epson 7800, 9880 and R2400 inkjet printers with Ultrachrome K3 inks.

Students should bring their own files for printing (on CD or DVD as memory sticks can carry viruses). Keep in mind that this course is not intended to produce finished work, but should be considered as a time to experiment with a wide variety of ideas. The limited time available will become very busy with prints in the queue and the aim of the course is to inspire and encourage experiment.

4 DAY CREATIVE DIGITAL PRINTING COURSE

For basic, intermediate and advanced level students familiar with medium A3+ desktop and wide format inkjet printers.
The idea of this extended course is to open the doors to the possibilities of inkjet printing on a wide variety of media; encourage the use of alternative printing methods and enable the student to have time to complete complex processes from start to finish.

This is a creative course with an emphasis on technical solutions to unique problems.
By learning about the technical possibilities and limitations of inkjet printers, the student will quickly be able to assess the potential success of an idea based on the hard facts governing these complex printing devices. By understanding what the printer can and cannot do the student will be able to implement creative solutions to overcome problems.

Course outline
The course will give the student advanced training on operating Epson Medium and Wide Format printers including settings for various media and print quality.

• The course will begin with understanding colour; the calibration of monitors including your own laptops, working with and creating custom profiles for a wide range of hand coated and factory coated media.
• The student will learn how to adjust special settings for the printers to maximise the quality by adjusting inkjet focus, platten gap and media feed based on media thickness and ink absorbation.
• The course will include the preparation of inkjet pre-coatings on a variety of alternative media including very thin Japanese papers, fine art papers, synthetic materials and metal sheet.
• Create your own inkjet coatings from standard art materials. Combine traditional art materials and colours with inkjet printing to add depth and enhance the visual quality of the work.
• How to print an album (such as a wedding album) on both sides of double sided media, and how to print on asymmetric flat shapes.
• The advanced use of Qimage – one of the best and cost effective printing software solutions will allow the student to print with professional control and certain results. How to set up the software to maximise your computers available resources. The printing work flow includes the use of color profiles for standard Epson Media and any new profiles created on the course by participants.
• Post coating for print protection. The use of postcoats applied with spray, sponge roller and brush for special effects. Coatings include UVLS (Ultra Violet Light Stabilisers) to maximise pigment print life and durability.

Students will have the full use of:
• 2 Windows XP OS computers with calibrated monitors (you are encouraged to use your own laptop if you have one to reduce waiting times on the printing workstations.
• Epson 7800, 9880 and R2400 inkjet printers with Ultrachrome K3 inks for • Gloss and Matte media.
• Post coat sprayer system with compressor and HVLP spray gun, roller • applicators and several types of post coat varnishes with a variety of finishes.

Students should bring their own files for printing (on CD or DVD as memory sticks can carry viruses) and any personal choices of media up to 1.8mm thick. This really is the thickness limit for these wide format printers and depending on the coatings there may be problems which we cannot overcome.

Keep in mind that this course is intended to produce finished work, but the main purpose is to experiment and explore a wide variety of ideas and methods for production. The limited time available will become very busy with prints in the queue and the aim of the course is to inspire and encourage experiment.
