The 19th festival Waterpieces, this year will be held on 8th, 9th and 23rd of August at the floating Arts center „Noass“ with a program that combines exhibition, performances and lectures with masterclasses led by digital media professionals.

At 18:00 on the evening of 8 August, the first day of the Waterpieces Festival will start with the opening of Līva Arnava ’s personal exhibition Maybe Really. The artist herself describes the exhibition, which showcases various media object installations, as an opportunity to step out of her information bubbles and view them from a lateral perspective, allowing its viewers to assess, not processes from their personal perspectives, but perspectives themselves, returning to their fundamental elements – vision, light and perception. The exhibition and the artist’s works will be introduced by curator Tīna Pētersone.

Around 20:00, the evening will continue with text group Орбита ’s performance Motopoiesis, in which the vocal timbre and intonation of the person readying the poetry is activated by various electro-mechanic sound compositional device. In this performance, each author will read his poem in the intonation, tempo and volume, which he considers most appropriate for the specific work with the help of a device invented by the artists themselves that transforms vocal audio signal volume dynamics into fluctuating electricity and thereafter sound. The video accompaniment makes it possible to study the working surface of the poets’ laboratory and to show what exactly is creating the sound heard the relevant moment on screen. The authors of the technical solution are metal artist Jēkabs Voļatovskis and radio engineer Vladislavs Bogdanovs.

Орбита has already performed Motopoiesis in Latvia and Italy, but the performance is new and thus continually variable. The audience attending the Waterpieces festival will have the chance to view Motopoiesis in a new phase of development and experience artistic solutions that will be performed for the first time to a public audience.

The performance will be preceded by a short story told by literary critic and media theoretician IIlva Skulte about Орбита and this specific performance. Together with her sister, art historian and critic, Aiga Dzalbe has recently written a book about Орбита , which was published by the Neputns publishing house. During the conversation, the audience will have the chance to ask the artists questions and to receive answers.

In turn, the group Gas of Latvia will take the stage at 21:30. On this occasion, Andris Indāns and Gatis Ziema will perform compositions from Gas of Latvia’s latest album Nutcracker, which was released this spring. It will be an intensive and psychedelic alternative dance music programme, in which we will hear echoes of industrial music, techno, IDM and post-rock. The performance will be introduced by the CEO of the Sound Forest festival Viestarts Gailītis.

Andris Indāns’ free form electronic music project Gas of Latvia was launched in 1997 and has released 16 albums, had various line-ups, performed countless concerts, participated in alternative and experimental music and art festivals in Latvia and elsewhere in Europe. Interestingly, in the late 1990s, when it was not yet anchored by AB dambis, the floating arts centre Noass hosted the presentation of one of the first Gas of Latvia albums Sun Shine Brightly.

The 19th festival “Waterpieces” will start with solo exhibition of Līva Arnava “Perhaps/ Really”.

The artist tells: “Perhaps such common expressions as saying “like” after every third word and eventually turning all the sentences into questions, really is a form of resistance in the age of information. Like a constant, light insecurity about everything. No one really knows what one is talking about. No one wants to offend anyone and everyone is aware that existing views may be based on the omnipresent internet falsehood. Texts without a context, fake news and made up memories. Perhaps it Really is caused by a bad vision? We just see very poorly. But my father used to say that if a person is saying “really” when telling something, then it really means it is not like that at all.”

The exhibition “Perhaps/ Really” allows its visitors to evaluate, not the processes from their own point of view, but the viewpoints themselves, returning to their fundamentals – vision, light and perception. Solo exhibition of Līva Arnava shows an opportunity to step out of the information bubbles we are locked in and look at them from afar.

Exhibition opening will take place on 8th of August, 2019 starting from 18:00. The opening will be continued with performances of a text group “Orbita” and “Gas of Latvia”.

Darbu tapšanas gada skaitļi (1939, 1941, 1945, 1949, 1956…1990…2000.) un daļa to tapšanas vietas – deportācijas vagons, koncentrācijas nometne, kara gūstekņu filtrācijas nometne, lēģeris – neprasa papildus komentārus.

From 26 July to 15 September 2018, Rasa Šulca’s solo exhibition PARASOMNIA will be on view at NOASS Arts Centre.

Parasomnia or sleeplessness is a form of sleep disturbance that is characterized by certain behaviours while a person is sleeping. However, here the focus will be on quite exceptional disturbances, or expression beyond the control of the mind, which leads to moments of internal lucidity somewhere in the intermediate zone between dreams and consciousness.

Sleeping people are not only capable of simply murmuring and snoring. A case in point is a musician from New York named Dion Macgregor, who, while sleeping, tends to provide a report on his dreams in the form of a conversation. Sometimes, a person will carry out activities in his sleep that he has never carried out in real life; moreover, doing so at a professional level. During the day, Lee Hadwin works in a hospital, but at night he turns into an artist, who creates “strange and fantastic works of art”. The most interesting thing is that, while awake, Hadwin is not remotely capable of drawing anything akin to that which he creates during the night.

However, this is not yet all – sometimes, a person can find himself in an unusual state between sleep and wakefulness, when, having released the tension stemming from a long and arduous day, he comes into contact with his inner *me*. The exhibition showcases a cycle of artworks (paintings and video), which depicts this special and magical moment, when a person has liberated himself from the onerous chains of reality as experienced in the surrounding world, and now focuses his attention on his inner world. Just occasionally, a light suddenly startles the mind and we “see” something we’ve never seen before. All that remains is to accept this strange flow and not to attempt to drive away the images you can see, sense or hear. While one person may be overcome by inner peace, bliss, indescribability or a state of timelessness, someone else may consider this state to be perfectly ordinary. No matter what feelings describe this state of insomnia, one thing is quite clear: at such times, a person becomes especially beautiful.

About the artist:

Rasa Šulca is a graduate of the Art Academy of Latvia’s Painting Department. In 2003, she received a Master’s degree in humanities, specializing in art.

To date, she has had five solo exhibitions and taken part in several group exhibitions in Latvia and overseas. Her works can be found in the collections of Mūkusala Art Salon, as well as in private collections in Latvia, Sweden, Germany and the United Kingdom.

Her most important cycles of painting are Model at the 1st Floor Gallery (2008), Securityat the Latvian National Museum of Art Arsenāls Exhibition Hall (2008), Creative Workshop, LinksNabaklab Art Space (2012), Ten at MANSS Gallery (2013), Nobody Said a Thing at Mūkusala Art Salon (2015), And a Wolftogether with Dace Dēliņa-Lipska at the Kalciems Quarter Gallery in Riga (2016).

Rasa Šulca lives and works in Riga, Latvia.

According to Rasa Šulca, “The leading characters in my paintings are not really my ideal beings or strangers, but rather objects for contemplation. However, the main task of paintings is not to captivate

Exhibition open from 26th of July – 15th of September, from Wednesday – Saturday 15:00 – 22:00.

Opening 25th of July starting from 18:00

Solo exhibition of Kaspars Teodors Brambergs “Relax” open from 28th of June – 15th of September.

Kaspars Teodors Brambergs’ answer to two previous exhibitions (Dynamis(2014) at NOASS Gallery and The Flow(2016) at the Great Amber Concert Hall), the project Relax is transformed from an imaginary to a real space. The abstract aspires to address the audience in descriptive terms. Brutal metal structures prompt one to think about a much more fragile and unstable substance based on pseudo-functionality. Possibly, the dispassionate humanisation of material. A multi-layered and concurrently laconic link between the elements of the object prompts one to model the comprehensible; to decipher the ostensible practicality of forms. Relaxopens up consciousness to interpretation, nevertheless leaving it undeciphered

http://brambergs.net

Opening 28th of June starting from 18:00.

Opening hours of the gallery from Wednesday – Saturday 15:00-22:00.
