Hanns Holger Rutz solo exhibition “Configuration”

Hanns Holger Rutz

‘Configuration’ is a site-specific sound and video installation built for the ship Betanovuss. Three things come together here. Firstly, a peculiar side effect of my recent works is that they develop also a material-visual language, often through the necessity to understand algorithms. As these visual elements configurate the way I am thinking and conceiving sound structures, I wanted to explore the possibility to give them their own presence. Secondly, I am experimenting since a while with the genetic programming of sounds. The computer approximates a given sound through a network of code elements. A process is instantiated this way, where series are produced that are characterised by close relationships among them and by the particular constraints of the programming language elements. What is interesting is the incomputability of the target sound that becomes subordinate to a differential motion of the algorithm itself. Thirdly, these formal elements are triggered by and rendered through the specific space, the layout and atmosphere, the objects found in situ. The work was carried out during a residency at NOASS, co-sponsored by the State of Styria, Austria.

Hanns Holger Rutz is a German composer, performer and as well as researcher at the intersection of sound art, computer music and electroacoustic music. He is the author of various computer programs for sound transformation and algorithmic electroacoustic composition as well. He’s studied computer music and audio engineering at the Technical University Berlin (2004 – 2009), he’s obtained a PhD in computer music and worked as assistant professor at the Studio for electroacoustic Music (SeaM) Weimar.

His compositions include tape music, works with video, as well as collaborative works with theatre and dance. His recent focus is on sound installation, electronic live improvisation and the development of novel algorithmic systems.

His work has been presented in international festivals, exhibitions and concerts, including Germany, Austria, Romania, Latvia, Denmark, United Kingdom, Spain, Slovenia, and Venezuela.

He currently lives in Graz and works at the Institute for Electronic Music and Acoustics (IEM).

Residency is organized in collaboration with, The Regional Government of Styria and Austrian Embassy in Latvia and Latvian Ministry of Culture.

Exhibition open May 16th – 28th
