Musical evenings

/May – September/

In summer season the Culture and Arts project „NOASS” organizes musical evenings. These events offer the chance to attend concerts by Latvian or international musicians and see art exhibitions in the floating galleries „NOASS” and „BETANOVUSS”.

 

 

Jean Bonichon’s installation “Strange Fruit” and the opening performance

Project’s sketch

French artist Jean Bonichon  is creating an installation called “Strange Fruit”, which is a reference to the jazz singer Billie Holiday’s famous song with the same title. The installation will be designed like a tree with flowing, ghostly, black plastic faces hanging from it. The artist’s performance will complete the installation.

The works of Jean Bonichon stand on the border between the absurd and the serious by analysing the amitology of ordinary and everyday objects, the main character of which usually is the artist himself. In 2011 Bonichon received the honorary award of the city Nantes.

 

 

 

Graphic exhibition “Back to chaos”
/July – August/

In summer 2016, graphics festival “Back to the Chaos” will contain graphics exhibitions and a series of festival-related activities.

An exhibition in Arts and Culture Centre “NOASS” will bring together two Scandinavian artists from Denmark and Finland - Rasmus Danø and Janika Herlevi. Each artist represents a different graphical language and temperament, highlighting the festival’s overall theme – chaos, extreme diversity, different attitudes and perspectives on world order. The artists will take up a separate space each in the basement of “BETANOVUSS”.

The graphics festival is organized by the association “Grafikas kamera”.

The graphics exhibition opening ceremony will be held on 29th of July at 8 p.m. Exhibiton will be available from July 30 til August 14.

 

 

Kate Krolle’s solo exhibition “i could be elsewhere”
/August 18 – October 1/

Kate Krolle (born 1984) is a graduate of the Art Academy of Latvia and the prestigious Le Fresnoy contemporary art school in France, where she received the “Les amis du Fresnoy” award. Using the most diverse media, the artist examines the relationships between nature and human life that interest her, along with experience and instincts. In 2012, under the auspices of the contemporary art festival “Survival Kit 4“, together with Atis Jākabsons, she created a video installation “Truth is Simple”, while as part of the corresponding festival a year later, she and Anete Vanaga created an installation and performance “Gourmands”. Her second solo exhibition “I could be elsewhere” will be on view in August this year at the Floating Arts gallery “NOASS”.

“.. I had not imagined finding myself in my hands. I look at them. They’re empty. I continue looking. I touch. I touch my hand with a hand.
It’s clear that I feel. But what is it that’s touching me? Awareness of my existence? Is it possible to simultaneously distance from oneself in order to get a sense of oneself? This is not even a question; this is exactly what’s happening.”

 

The exhibition’s opening ceremony will take place at 19:00 on 18 th of August during the 16 th “Waterpieces” festival.

The exhibition has been organized with support from the State Culture Capital Foundation and Riga City Council.

 

 

16th International Contemporary and Video Art festival “Waterpieces”

/August 19 – 21/

From August 19 – 21, the floating art centre “NOASS” and AB Dam park will change into a colourful video island, where everyone will be invited to see several open-air video shows, and audio-visual performances by Latvian and international artists. The festival will offer an opportunity to see artist-made interactive installations and take part in workshops for children and adults, presenting festival audience with the technical and artistic diversity of moving images.

 

 

A continuation of the project “Stories told by water – The Daugava”

/August/

Objects “Story Recorder” and “Story Listener”, which are placed on the AB Dam and the Daugava since the summer of 2015, already have attracted the attention of Riga’s residents and guests. They are regularly discussed, photographed and they ate are an introduction to further development. The stories (data) of the Daugava were archived, deciphered and transformed into a visual format in 2015 and it can be used as groundwork for multidisciplinary art projects, thus bringing together artists, students, professors and scientists. This project emphasizes the importance of the river Daugava in an artistic and modern way.   The exhibition “Translator” will showcase the works created during workshops.

 

All cultural events organized by Culture and Arts project “NOASS” are free of charge.

Culture and Arts project “NOASS” is open to the public from May to October.
