THE PARTICIPANTS IN THE SECOND STAGE OF THE RESIDENCY PROGRAMME

As part of the Nordic – Baltic mobility programme, Swedish artists Jonas Nilsson and Eva Olsson will arrive in Riga on September 3. Nilsson and Olsson mainly work with the moving image and use animation as one of their forms of expression. Their works play on philosophical references to daily life in the Western world and examine the conflict between the individual and society.

NOASS has selected this pair of artists to be the participants in the second stage of the residency programme, because Eva and Jonas are active in the field of video art and life in Riga could inspire them both in the creation of new works. Moreover, for several years now these artists have organised their own video festival whose goals accord with the mission of the Waterpieces video and contemporary arts festival in Latvia.

Within the Waterpieces programme, Nilsson and Olsson will present a sixty minute long selection of video works from the Art Video Screening. Every two years, this festival provides young video artists with the opportunity to present their works to a wider public. The programme promises to be interesting and dynamic – including works by artists from Sweden and other countries.

During their month long residency in Riga, Eva and Jonas also plans to create new video works. In one of them, the artists plan to ‘reincarnate’ one of the jewels of Latvia’s cultural and historical legacy – the works in the Latvian Museum of Naive Art.
