THE SELECTION PROCEDURE IS CONCLUDED!

The selection procedure identifying residents for the Nordic – Baltic residency programme Artists-in- Residency has now concluded. The aim of the programme, within the framework of the operation of the Nordic Culture Point, is to give Nordic artists and industry professionals the chance to visit Riga and discover its cultural environment, thus drawing inspiration for the creation of new works and cooperation between culture organisations.

The NOASS residency programme has extended a special invitation to artists, as well as art curators whose work is linked to the creation of video and new media works. Having reviewed the applications received, we have selected artists who have proposed to spend their residencies in Riga creating personal exhibitions, leading seminars, cooperating with local arts organisations and sharing their experience in the organisation of video festivals.

Gary Wornell, a Canadian artist resident in Finland arrived in Riga in mid-July. Wornell is a renowned artist in Scandinavia whose creative work has gravitated towards an exploration of the possibilities offered by digital photography and special Epson printers. In recent years, the artist has used various non-traditional technologies in his works which expand the opportunities offered by printing and break the stereotypes of digital images and photographs.

In his studio in Finland, Wornell regularly hosts creative workshops exploring on the technologies used and discovered by him. In Riga he will also be offering artists, art students and other interested persons the chance to take part in two such workshops – one focussing on creative printing, as well as a special workshop expanding creative possibilities for digital photographers. We are planing to have also two exhibitions of his work in Naïve Art Museum of Latvia.

The overall goal of all these courses is to highlight the unlimited printing opportunities offered by printing through experimentation with the various platforms of digital ink printing, collages of different materials, as well as UV ray resistant coverings.

More detailed information about the timings and schedules of the workshops will be published on the NOASS homepage: noass.lv

Eva Olsson and Jonass Nilsson from Sweden.

Both artists operate in the field of video art examining our understanding of individual and social values and mutual relations. For the last four years, Olsson and Nilsson have been organising video showcases and a festival in their home town supporting the efforts of young artists in this artistic medium.

Since Eva Olsson and Jonas Nilsson’s work accords with the Waterpieces video and contemporary arts festival organised by NOASS, in September local residents and visitors to Riga will also have the chance to view a showcase of Swedish video art. During their tenure in Riga, the artists also plan to create a special video work which will ‘reincarnate’ one of the jewels of Latvia’s cultural and historical legacy, the creative offering of Latvia’s naivists.
