WATERPIECES 2013
From 15-17 August, Ab dambis and “NOASS” Floating Arts Centre will become the principal venue for the 13th international contemporary and video art festival “Waterpieces”. This year’s festival will focus on video poetry, the interaction of text and image, the latest offerings from “Onedotzero”, as well as a programme specially devised for Rīga showcasing works by emerging Japanese artists: “Searching for Anime Form”, which has been produced in collaboration with the “Japanese Media Art Festival” and Yunya Jamamine, Curator Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography.
15 August – the first day of the festival – is dedicated to video works based on or inspired by poetry. The programme will kick off with a presentation by Artūrs Punte, representing the text group “Orbīta, in which he will document the development of Latvian video jazz and its latest works, followed by the next element of the evening programme: a performance by VJ Zane Raudiņa and Jeļena Glazova. The evening will conclude with “Poemetrics”, a selection poetry inspired videos compiled by the leading innovative British short film festival “Onedotzero”, which will present various types of moving image works, characterised by use of quirky solutions and emotionally dynamic messages.
16 August – the second day of the festival will showcase a programme specially compiled for Rīga of works by emerging Japanese artists – “Searching for Anime form”, which will combine video works by six talented young media artists, a joint performance in a mood of jazz by the promising multimedia art group “Okamotonoriaki” and VJ Masashi Yokota, as well as artist Yusuke Shigeta’s video installation “Pixel Forest”, which depicts the vivid world of children’s stories and miracles, using pixel images with lightly nostalgic computer game graphics. Yusuke Shigeta has already previously played the literary characters of a number of iconic authors including the heroes of Hans Christian Andersen’s fairytales, bet this time in low bit form he’ll bring to life a fragment of Rainis’ play “The Golden Horse”. Friday evening will conclude with a set performed by Mārtiņš Ratniks.
17 August – the third day of the festival will present a selection of the best works from the 16th Japanese Media Art Festival which will be presented in person by festival representative Maiko Wakui, while the conclusion will showcase the very latest works from “Onedotzero” – an audacious selection of short films “Resonate”, which combine the latest moving image forms with hybrid solutions, in such fields of video as motion graphics, short films, animation and music video.
